The Southwestern Philosophy of Education Society was sponsored by Glen Hoskins and first met in 1950 at Southern Methodist University. The first President was Charles Flinn Arrowood from the University of Texas. The purpose of the society was to encourage scholarly research in the philosophy and history of education and provide graduate students with the opportunity to present papers on timely topics in education. Since its inception, the society continues to host timely research and offers opportunities for graduate student to present their work.
In 1992, as the Society went beyond regional boundaries and witnessed greater interest in membership, the name was changed to the Society of Philosophy and History of Education and the SWPES Proceedings was restructured as a refereed Journal of Philosophy and History of Education (JOPHE).
JOPHE is the annual publication of the society and is made up of papers selected from presentations at the annual meeting and contributions from members. Papers included in the Journal are collected by the editor and evaluated by the members of the editorial board. The current editors of JOPHE are Donna Sayman, Wichita State University and Frank Giuseffi, William Woods University.
A Special Interest Group, the Texas Educational Foundations Society, was proposed by Martha Tevis in 1987, which was later changed to The Educational Foundations Society (TEFS) and now the Martha Tevis Educational Foundations Society. The Society discusses the condition of the foundations of education at various universities and sponsors the annual William E. Drake Lecture on educational foundations.
The goal of the Society of Philosophy and History of Education is to provide a forum for eclectic scholarship in the philosophical, historical, and social foundations of education including educational issues, praxis, biography, administration, and curriculum. The society welcomes educational and arts and sciences faculty, graduate students, and independent scholars.
The Society of the Philosophy and History of Education provides a forum for faculty, graduate students, and independent scholars to present in depth scholarship in the philosophical, historical, and social foundations of education, valuing scholarly work in educational issues, praxis, biography, administration, and curriculum.
